William Morris Hunt was born in Brattleboro, Vermont, on March 31, 1824. His father was a judge as well as a member of the US House of Representatives. His mother was greatly interested in the arts, and as a child she had wanted to enroll in painting classes offered at her school but was forbidden to do so by her father. It is probably because of this experience that she wanted her children to be able to pursue their artistic talents to their fullest. When Hunt was a boy his father died, and the family moved to New Haven, Connecticut.1(p3)While living there, an Italian refugee, an artist named Gambadella, came to town looking for asylum in the United States (at the time there was a revolutionary movement in Italy). Hunt's mother belonged to the Unitarian Church, which supported the refugees' cause.2(p7)Gambadella arrived with letters of introduction, and Mrs Hunt took him in and gave him a room in her home. She also agreed to help him find pupils for a painting class he planned to teach. Unfortunately, she could not find anyone to take his class, so she and her children were the only students. At the end of their class the Hunt family had an exhibition to showcase their work. Everyone saw what they had achieved and wanted to be in the class themselves, but Mrs Hunt let them know that they were too late.1(p3)
